چکیده

Objective: To study the sexual dimorphism and regional differences of the varied features of the sacrum in eastern India and record the significant anthropometric indices of the study. Background: In the determination of personal individuality from adult human skeletal remains, the pelvis affords the best marked and reliable characteristics for distinguishing sex in 90-95% subjects. Since the sacrum is an integral element of the axial skeleton and contributes to the functional differences of the pelvic girdle between the two genders, it has a distinct medico-legal importance in ascertaining the sex by means of the anthropometric measurements observed upon it. Materials and Methods: 250 normal human adult sacra were acquired from the Departments of Anatomy and Anthropology under the different medical & science colleges in Kolkata, West Bengal, during the years 2004-2009 for the study of anthropometric measurements and sexual dimorphism. The measurements included length, width, curved length of the sacra, antero-posterior and transverse diameter of the first sacral vertebrae, sacral index, corporo-basal index etc. Demarking points [DP] for these parameters were used for identification of the sex of the sacrum. Results: The results of the present study were compared with previous studies for regional differences. The sacral index (44.7%) was found to be the most useful criterion metric data for identification of the female sacrum followed by curvature index (26.8%) while in case of the male sacrum, corporo-basal index (23.6%) was found to be most useful, followed by sacral index (9.4%) in this study. Summary and Conclusion: To study sexual dimorphism in human sacrum, 127 male and 123 female sacra were studied from Kolkata District, West Bengal. This study may have importance in Anatomy, Anthropology and Forensic Medicine.

Sexual dimorphism of Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859) in Gamasiab River, Kermanshah province

Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859 is considered as one of the non-native and invasive species in the inland waters of Iran. This species occurs in most inland basins and aquatic bodies of Iran and has even been found in brackish waters. Extensive adaptations of this species to its different habitats caused numerous changes in its biological characteristics and morphological traits. The present st...

Sexual dimorphism in digit length ratios of the second to fourth digits (2D:4D) in Blanford's fringe-toed lizard Acanthodactylus blanfordi Boulenger, 1918 (Sauria: Lacertidae) in the south of Iran

Finger length ratios are organized during embryonic development of fingers as they exposed to sex steroid hormones, and may show varying degrees of sexual dimorphism between males and females in different animal groups. Among all the finger length ratios calculated in a sample, the ratio between the second to fourth fingers (2D: 4D) is the most important one. In this study, the 2D:4D ratios in ...

Reduced Skull Sexual Dimorphism in a Local Sheep Breed

This study estimated the magnitude of sexual dimorphism in a relict sheep from Catalunya (NE Spain), called Fardasca, using geometric morphometric techniques. For these analyses, a total of 18 skull specimens (2 adult males and 16 females) were studied. Our results suggest that the breed is not cranially dimorphic, so sex determination using landmarks described here as criteria is likely to yiel...

Sexual Dimorphism in a New Species of Cassiduloid Echinoid, Pygaulus baghinensis, from the Aptian Strata of Baghin Area, West of Kerman, Iran

A new species of cassiduloid echinoids, Pygaulus baghinensis is reported for the first time from Aptian sediments of Baghin area, west of Kerman, Iran. The diagnostic features of the species are centrally positioned of the apical disc and approximately low profile of the test. Variation in gonopore size in different individuals allows to conclude that P. baghinensis is sexually dimorphic. Speci...

Sexual dimorphism in digit length ratios of the second to fourth digits (2D:4D) in two species of green toads (Pelobates syriacus Boettger, 1889 and Bufo viridis (Laurenti, 1768))

Sexual dimorphism in the ratio of digits length is a morphological feature resulted from the interaction between sex hormones and prenatal Hox genes, the latter is known to control the development of both limbs and genitals. The status of this trend and ratios have been investigated in various animal groups, including humans, other mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. In this study, the bo...
